This is a digital product delivered via email after purchase.
Please read the detailed information below about The List before purchase – no refunds for digital products.
The List is offered at various prices to allow for various levels of support to the pet food consumer advocacy work of Susan Thixton and TruthaboutPetFood.com. The document is the same no matter what price you purchase at.
For more information on The List, Click Here.
- The List is not an endorsement of any pet food. It is a 'list' of pet foods that I (Susan Thixton) would trust to give to my pets. The pet foods were chosen after detailed information and verification to quality of ingredients was provided. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that any of these pet foods won't be recalled in the future.
- No pet food company pays to be on The List. I do not receive money from pet food companies – Susan Thixton, TruthaboutPetFood.com and AssociationforTruthinPetFood.com is 100% consumer supported.
- You won’t find any of these pet foods in Big Box pet food or Big Box retail stores. These pet foods can be purchased from quality independent pet foods stores and directly from the manufacturer.
- All pet foods on the 2020 List - excluding three - are available only in the US. One pet food is available exclusively in Canada.
The 2020 List includes 15 cat foods and 24 dog foods. There are 17 cooked/wet pet foods, 10 raw pet foods, 4 dehydrated pet foods, 4 freeze dried pet foods, and 2 kibble pet foods.(some companies make multiple styles of pet food).

Disappointed this year...
Posted by Unknown on 18th Sep 2020
I've purchased the List for a few years now with good results. This year I bought one of the cat foods listed (CARU) and was horribly disappointed. What was sold as a "Stew" was a soupy mess that looked like... well, no need to describe further. I had been feeding Primal and was looking for a way to save a little bit of money so was open to experiment. Both cats wouldn't touch the new stuff and i don't blame them.

The list is great to have .

I've relied on these annual lists since I lost my cat to kidney failure. He was only ten years old. I can find some of these brands on Chewy dot com and they ship for free. My local pet food stores also carry a few of these brands. My kitties get skin issues and diarrhea from any canned cat food that has xanthin gum, guar gum , or any type of gum. I'm also not happy about how so many canned cat foods use pea flour as one of the first three ingredients so I'm trying to transition them to mostly raw food & cat food recipes from her book. I use Susan's book (DINNER PAWSIBLE) for the homemade cat food recipes.

I took my The Truth About Pet Food 2020 list to my local pet store, and was able to find a few of the foods on the list. Instantly, the sales person on the floor said that they did not recognize many of the pet foods on the list but had agreed that Open Nature was a great pet food, he even showed me how to look up the lot # for recalls. But to my surprise when I introduced a little of the kibble to my dog, she immediately LOVED it! She never takes to food switches very well, often I have to give up and return the new food to the store. I could see and smell the difference immediately, my dog experienced no usual diarrhea or vomiting, we actually use it to fill her Kong with as a treat. If only I had known about this list sooner! It's hard to make pet food decisions, it feels hopeless sometimes, but at least I know a lot of research and product knowledge went into this list and the fact that this organization doesn't profit from pet food companies makes me feel I am doing the best for my pets health and nutrition.

For a small fee this was a lot of research I would never have been able to do myself. Even though I feed raw I occasionally buy kibble, so very helpful.

Overall the info is good. I feed my shar pei raw anyways, but wanted an idea of what others thought or what they came up with when it came to great food, raw and dry.

I rely on this list to inform me of the best quality cat foods available on the market. I lost three cats to cancer or kidney failure feeding them kibble. Now I feed them quality raw food. This list is indispensable.

The list didn't address the brands that I
usually purchase or find locally.
A vital MUST HAVE compendium/resource for pet guardians.

The 2020 List is an invaluable and honest evaluation of top tested pet foods. Of great value was listing of origins of contents, nutrients and additives. The Resources listed contacts for home-prepared pet food recipes. I live in a small, rural area with little to no resources for the healthful options reviewed.
