Please read the detailed information below about The List before purchase – no refunds for digital products.
The List is offered at various prices to allow for various levels of support to the pet food consumer advocacy work of Susan Thixton and TruthaboutPetFood.com. The document is the same no matter what price you purchase at.
For more information on The List, Click Here.
- The List is not an endorsement of any pet food. It is a 'list' of pet foods that I (Susan Thixton) would trust to give to my pets. The pet foods were chosen after detailed information and verification to quality of ingredients was provided. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that any of these pet foods won't be recalled in the future.
- No pet food company pays to be on The List. I do not receive money from pet food companies – Susan Thixton, TruthaboutPetFood.com and AssociationforTruthinPetFood.com is 100% consumer supported.
- You won’t find any of these pet foods in Big Box pet food or Big Box retail stores. These pet foods can be purchased from quality independent pet foods stores and directly from the manufacturer.
- All pet foods on the 2020 List - excluding three - are available only in the US. One pet food is available exclusively in Canada.
The 2020 List includes 15 cat foods and 24 dog foods. There are 17 cooked/wet pet foods, 10 raw pet foods, 4 dehydrated pet foods, 4 freeze dried pet foods, and 2 kibble pet foods.(some companies make multiple styles of pet food).

Ms. Thixton has saved many dogs by publishing the list.
Most people do not understand what disgusting things are hidden in dog food. She has been a brave crusader to shine a light on such a despicable industry.
If your pup wants to eat...!

Susan’s research, articles, and lists provide me with so much knowledge and comfort in feeding my pups. I have and still use Susan’s lists almost exclusively because not only is it vital info to me, but it also gives me the avenue to financially support her. I just wish more companies were more accessible to all, since many are available for local purchase only.

The List is a wonderful tool for selecting quality pet food. But comparing to the 2019 List, I find the 2020 List a bit disappointing. While there are more companies than ever advertising “quality”, human grade food, the List has fewer recommended producers. The 2020 List also has omitted the cost range thatnwas in the 2019 List. The pricing helps narrow down food quickly for those of us who can’t afford to pay $10/day per pet for food. Having 3 dogs, checking those ranges and seeing a certain food starts at $10/day, that’s $900/month for dog food. Knowing I can’t pay that, I could not even bother researching that food, saving me time and trouble. It would also be helpful to have the form of foods available at a glance. For example, I’m not comfortable with feeding raw, so including raw, cooked, freeze dried, etc... in chart form would also help the user quickly determine which foods to investigate further. It’s still a valuable tool, but I feel the 2020 List falls a bit short compared to previous efforts.

They do the research for you with the best interests of your pet in mind— not the bottom line. Thank-you for the list!

Standing in front of wall of pet food, and still walking out empty handed.
There are brands I was not familiar with, and some brands I expected to see that were not on this year's list. I will be looking into the ones *not* on the List; and trying many that are.
Thank You, as always for a thoughtful and informative way to support your important advocacy work.

This is my "go to" list for the most accurate, up to date information on the best and safest pet foods out there. I have been using one of Ms. Thixton's recommended dog foods for several years now and I've got healthy, happy dogs as a result. Thank you, Susan, for your tireless advocacy on behalf of our beloved pets and us!

I don’t know how I managed before I heard about your list (have been getting it for ~5 years. My only question is what happened to Primal. All of a sudden, a few weeks ago, my cats refused to it it. What has changed? I see it’s not on the 2020 list. I like Open Farm, but with nine cats I’d love the option of a bigger box (am going to write them!).

I was surprised the list was so short. I feed Ziwi Peak dog food and I believe it is very good but it is not on the list.
