There is no difference in The List, no matter what price you purchase at.
It is offered at various prices to allow for various levels of support to the pet food consumer advocacy work
of Susan Thixton and TruthaboutPetFood.com.
This is a digital product delivered via email after purchase. Please read the detailed information below about The List before purchase – no refunds for digital products.

- The List is not an endorsement of any pet food. It is a 'list' of pet foods that I would trust to give to my pets. The pet foods were chosen after detailed information and verification to quality of ingredients was provided. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that any of these pet foods won't be recalled in the future.
- No pet food company pays to be on The List. I do not receive money from pet food companies – Susan Thixton, TruthaboutPetFood.com and AssociationforTruthinPetFood.com is 100% consumer supported.
- You won’t find any of these pet foods in Big Box pet food or Big Box retail stores. These pet foods can be purchased from quality independent pet foods stores and directly from the manufacturer.
- All pet foods on the 2019 List - excluding one - are available only in the US. One pet food is available exclusively in Canada with hopes to export to US in 2019.
The 2019 List includes 19 dog foods and 12 cat foods - a total of 21 different pet food companies. There are 14 cooked-style pet foods, 8 raw-style pet foods, 5 dehydrated or freeze dried-style pet foods, and 1 kibble pet food (some companies make multiple styles of pet food).

Honest review of foods

I appreciate that a site like this exists. There are plenty of websites that rate pet food and/or offer opinions, but this is the first one that I feel gives an unbiased, honest review of foods.

Thank you for all your hard work and research. I look forward to your insight every year to make sure I am feeding my furry family the very best!

I thought the list would be more inclusive of kibble/dry dog food and also include any not recommended.
Very Best Food for your Dog
Posted by Angela Eberle on 22nd Jan 2019
I was introduced to this study by Dr. Michael Fox, a well-known vet who writes a column for our local paper. I was overjoyed to learn that the food I was giving Max was on this list. It's The Farmers' Dog and it's great! Even my husband has enjoyed a bowl or two of it and says it's delicious especially with a little red Italian gravy over it!. I wish more folks would pay attention to what they are putting into their dogs body. I'm sure if they knew the half of it, all the pet food and stores would go out of business in a flash! I appreciate all of the tireless work that goes into all of this painstaking research and analysis. She really cares about all our animals and it shows in the work she has accomplished.
Information I can trust

I have been a subscriber to "The List" for several years and have learned so much about what to feed and NOT feed my dogs and cats. Thank you Susan Thixton for all the research you do and the battles you fight for our precious pets. My critters are all healthier and happier because of you.

Very helpful and coincides with other sites that have the same mission - healthy, uncontaminated food for pets. The number of products to choose from was a bonus as not all products are available in area.
Safe foods for my dogs

I agree with these choices. However Open farm does not do it for me. I know you didn’t review the kibble but full of peas and lentils. Also tried Raised right. Very expensive! My cat thought it was poison. Strong mint smell and big chunks of veggies. My dogs liked it but they will eat anything! Aging very over powering mint smell.
Exactly what I was looking for!

Thank you for this detailed and informative report. These days we continually hear about what we should and shouldn’t be feeding our pets. However it’s difficult to know which brands contain the safest ingredients as well as having all the nutritional value needed. I realized doing my own research was difficult since this industry is not regulated. This report contains the exact information I hoped to learn on my own but was unable to.
Invaluable information that takes the fear out of feeding our pets.

I buy this list every year and subscribe to petsumerreport.com so that I can know which gods are safe to feed my fur babies. After having two of them poisoned by a big-name, expensive dog food, I want to make sure it never happens again. Using the information in this list has also helped us detox one of our foster dogs who was almost put down due to his neurological issues which were caused by another big-name cheap but heavily advertised food. Happily he is almost back to normal since switching him to a safe food and organic goat’s milk. All of this information is worth wasaaaaaay more than what I pay for it every year. Thank you Susan for all you do for us.

I am among the millions of pet parents who, for various reasons, have purchased "name brand" cat foods. I have tried to understand the ingredients and buy what seem to be the healthiest. This review only covers brands I have never heard of and, in many cases, cannot buy. I understand that you might be trying to promote the reviewed brands but your review could have, at least, offered how these compared with the major brands available everywhere. This study did not help at all.
